Hotel Cosmopolite on Kongens Nytorv

On the corner of Gothersgade and Kongens Nytorv once stood Hotel Cosmopolite – a place where Copenhagen met the world. The hotel opened around 1904, rising with a proud façade and a view over the city’s bustling square. It was built for its time – elegant, modern, and with an international atmosphere, just as its name suggested.

Guests from near and far stepped through its doors and were met by a calm ambience: the scent of coffee and tobacco, the sound of soft footsteps on carpets, and quiet conversations in multiple languages. The hotel’s restaurant and palm garden were popular, attracting both business travellers and Copenhagen locals seeking a brief escape from everyday life.

Over time, the city changed, and new hotels took over. Cosmopolite quietly closed its doors, and the building was later used for offices, retail, and eventually banking – but even today, if you stand on that corner and look up, you can almost sense the echo of history: the hum of suitcase wheels, a porter’s friendly nod, and a world in motion in the heart of Kongens Nytorv.

The building that once housed Hotel Cosmopolite is a striking corner property, constructed around 1904. It sits where Gothersgade meets Store Kongensgade and offers direct views of Kongens Nytorv and the Royal Theatre’s Old Stage. Built in a historicist style, the property spans five floors plus an attic level, whose dormer windows gaze out over every corner of the city.

Kongens Nytorv has changed little since the time the property was built. Today, the square remains both a local transportation hub and an unrivalled attraction in the city. Nowhere else can you enjoy blinis with caviar almost side by side with a cheeseburger from McDonald’s. Its diversity draws people in, making Kongens Nytorv lively and crowded at any hour of the day.

Despite the many corner buildings surrounding the square, retail and restaurant leases here are rarely available—making this a unique opportunity to plant your flag at one of the busiest and most iconic locations in the country.
