»Cityhus« or »City House« in English. That is the name of the building, which proudly anchors the crossing, in which Østergade (and thus Strøget) is parted by Kristen Bernikows Gade. For an entire generation – and until 1971 – the corner of the building were occupied by Parfumerie Breining, a premium manufacturer and distributor of high-end parfumes and skincare. Parfumerie Breining were followed by a Danish bank in the 1970’s, but for most people today, the corner shop is known to house Tommy Hilfiger, whose flag has featured the building for two decades since the company’s entry to the Danish market just after the millennium. Now, Tommy Hilfiger’s tenure of the premises comes to an end, and a new long-term retail tenant is welcome to enter the greatly situated store with the impressive store front facing the only crossing on the premium stretch of Strøget. Hence, to say that this store is rarely on the market may be an understatement. Last time, the premises were vacant, Beyonce were still a part of Destiny’s Child.
At first glimpse, Østergade appears to be the luxury shopping destination of Copenhagen, which is indeed not false. However, Østergade is much more than that. From Østergade, customers can reach Copenhagen’s two department stores, Illum and Magasin, as well as the city’s vibrant fashion-district accessible through both Pilestræde, Kristen Bernikows Gade, Pistolstræde and Ny Østergade, which all begins at Østergade. Hence, there is much more to the area than revealed by one visit. Parted in two by the crossing with Kristen Bernikows Gade, Østergade’s Eastern part features high-end heritage brands including several watchmakers, while the Western part is anchored by contemporary luxury brands. Østergade 26 faces the Western part sitting on the Eastern part by the junction with Kristen Bernikows Gade, and hence has a foot in both camps. Next door to the lease, a luxury brand within travel-retail will open by the summer of 2025, which will follow the recent years’ openings of Vacheron Constantin, Hestra, J. Lindeberg, Swatch, Lindt & Sprüngli and Montblanc within a short distance from the shop.
